The Fermi Paradox: If Life Is Possible, Where Is Everybody?
Understand the Fermi Paradox, the Great Filter, detection limits and major proposed explanations.
The core question
If technological civilizations are possible and the galaxy is ancient, why do we have no confirmed evidence of them? That tension is commonly called the Fermi Paradox.
It is not proof that aliens do not exist
The paradox depends on uncertain assumptions: how often life begins, how often intelligence evolves, how long civilizations communicate and how detectable they are.
Possible explanations
Civilizations may be rare, short-lived, quiet, difficult to recognize, separated by enormous distances, or using technologies we do not monitor. Humanity may also have searched only a tiny fraction of the relevant space and time.
The Great Filter
The Great Filter idea proposes that one or more steps from chemistry to a long-lived technological civilization are extremely difficult. We do not know which step, if any, is the bottleneck.
Why it remains useful
The paradox organizes testable questions about biology, astronomy and technology. It is best treated as a research framework, not a solved mystery.
