How SETI Searches for Intelligent Life
How technosignature searches work, why false alarms happen and what confirmation would require.
What SETI means
The search for extraterrestrial intelligence studies possible evidence of technology beyond Earth. It is a scientific search, not a claim that contact has happened.
Radio searches
Telescopes examine portions of the radio spectrum for signals with characteristics that may be difficult to explain naturally. Most detections are human-made interference or known phenomena.
Optical searches
Some projects look for brief laser-like pulses or other unusual optical signatures. Candidates require independent confirmation.
The confirmation standard
A persuasive discovery would need repeatability, localization, independent observatories, elimination of terrestrial sources and transparent analysis.
Why a non-detection is limited
Searches cover only a small fraction of possible frequencies, directions, times and signal types. Silence so far does not settle whether anyone is out there.
